Carol's Corner

2012 VALENTINES DAY

What a busy beginning to 2012.  The Knook enjoyed a wonderful holiday season.  We gave gift certificates to customers who helped decorate the Knook.  In January, we restocked with yarn, notions, books and kits.  The Rapunzel Scarf/Hat kit is easy to knit and fun to wear, it can be seen in our"Valentine" window.  The class list has been upated for February and March on the website and on Facebook.  The Learn to Knit Classes have been very popular, we had to run this class twice in January.  Nancy Oakes class "Design Your Own Sweater" class was extremely successful amd everyone enjoyed learning different techniques and created lovely sweaters.  On the updated class list, Nancy Oakes will be teaching "Super Socks".  They are her own design and just the thing to slip into on a cold winter day. The socks are also displayed in our "Valentine" window.  Lil DeCoste has been very busy teaching the rest of the classes as well as private ones and, of course, knitting, knitting, knitting.  Katherin and I are meeting with sales reps ordering the Spring/Summer yarns.  I appreciate Katherin's assistance in selecting the yarns.  There is so much to choose from that I need her to help make decisions on colors as well the yarn.  I must mention, that Malabrigo was reordered as the first shipment is almost gone. I have  extended the line to include Rios which is a superwash worsted.  Lastly, the Knook is now official on the square as the shopping bags have our name, address and info on them.

INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION

We’ve all found ourselves in a box where we needed someone to give us a quick jumpstart to get going again.  That’s the time to stop in for that 5-10 minute fix.  If you are a Knitting Knook customer there is no charge for this.

There are also times when you need more than a quick fix and would like to be able to stop by when you are sure there is someone there to help who won’t be distracted by the customers that are looking for service as well.  For these times we have created some times when you can be sure that, for a fee of $15 per hour, the assistance will be available.  Come by on your lunch hour anytime between 12:00 and 2:00 on Thursday to get that help and spend your lunch time knitting.  (It’s good for the waistline as well as your knitting project!)  if your boss frowns on leaving the office at lunchtime, come by on Sunday between 11:00 and 1:00 on the days when the Learn to Knit classes are being held.  Lil will be ready to help you then.

If you want to be sure you have an instructor all to yourself and feel you want to be assured of personal attention, call and we’ll make an appointment for a private lesson at a rate of $25 per hour.  The time will be determined by your schedule and the availability of the instructor.

LEARN TO KNIT!

Maybe you’ve never held a knitting needle or haven’t held one since “Aunt Martha tried to teach you when you were in elementary school.  Take it from the many who are holed on it, knitting is fun, productive and, after you get the idea of it, it’s very relaxing!  In two lessons of two hours each you will learn the basics: cast on, knit, purl and bind off.  We supply the materials to get you started on those steps and in week two you will be ready to choose a pattern, needles and yarn for your first project.  Ongoing help is available when the store is open if customer demand allows, through our Customized Package described below, or the Individualized Instruction described above.

SLIPPER SOCKS

These will be just the right thing to have by the back door to slip your feet into when you come in from the cold.  Nancy Oakes will show you how to knit them over-sized, felt them for warmth and then needle felt your own designs.  Those who took her class and designed their own sweater can really appreciate Nancy’s talent and will have another chance to learn from her.

DOUBLE KNITTING

INTERMEDIATE

Make a reversible headband to keep the ears warm in the upcoming months.  It lends itself to showing off the school colors (black & orange, green & white, red & white, etc.) and would make a great vacation project for those students who already have learned to knit.  The technique used makes garments that are as colorful as they are warm. The process can be transferred to hats and mittens.  Only patience and concentration are required!

2:00-4:00 PM

MITTENS

EASY

No house with kids can have too many mittens and no mittens are as warm as the ones you make yourself.   It’s a great way to use that partial skein of yarn that we all have sitting in the basket.  This class teaches the standard double point version or you can choose the Magic Loop.

BRAID & BOBBLE HAT

This hat is on display and the Fiber Trend pattern is available for purchase.  It is a good way to learn to do those fancy cables and bobbles you’ve been thinking were too hard.

                                                            Wednesdays February 8 & 22

6:00 to 8:00 PM

$50.00 plus materials

TOP DOWN COWL COLLAR PULLOVER

INTERMEDIATE

Check the Knitting Pure and Simple Pattern and if you are interested we can set some times for a class.  There has been some interest expressed in day time classes so that might be an idea for this one since a sweater usually takes longer than a pair of mittens or hat.

Dates & Times to be determined by participants

A CUSTOMIZED PACKAGE FOR YOU

Sometimes our schedule doesn’t quite fit yours.  Sometimes you don’t have time to prepare for the next class and aren’t quite ready for the next step.  To help with that as well as save you a little expense, we are offering a special package that allows you to purchase a “pass”.  This pass allows you to attend any three classes of your choice for a cost of $75.00.  We’ll be ready to assist you with the project you are working on and you will also have the opportunity to learn something new.  We only ask that you call ahead to be sure there will be an instructor available.

ALWAYS TRYING TO ACCOMODATE

We’ve tried to provide variety in both topics and times but we can’t ever meet everyone’s needs.  If you like the class but not the time or date, give us a call and we’ll try to re-schedule.  If you have something you really want to learn how to do, give us a call.  We may be able to work out a solution.  Please share your thoughts in person, on the phone or by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
